phreaking, phishing
It is odd that the world of the Internet, which generally seeks to simplify matters of grammar and spelling, should have produced a complication in the spelling of these words with an initial ph-. The earlier is phreaking, which denotes the practice of gaining illegal entry (hacking) into telecommunications systems in order to obtain free calls, and is a blend of phone (hence the ph-) and freak in its sense ‘a bizarrely abnormal person or thing’; there may also be play on the words free call. This term provided the analogy for the more familiar term phishing, a crude alteration of fishing that denotes the fraudulent sending of bogus emails impersonating business organizations in order to obtain personal information, such as credit card details, from individuals. How productive this new word element becomes will depend on the ingenuity of this type of global criminal activity.
